IMAX is a motion picture film format. It consists of a system of high-resolution cameras, film formats, film projectors, and film theatres. Developed in Canada in the 1970s, IMAX seeks to give the viewer an immersive movie-watching experience with its large screens.

The disadvantage of using IMAX cameras is that You can see the whole pisture only in few cinemas with 1.43:1 aspect ratios.

Some IMAX theaters do use traditional 3D with smaller glasses, so you'll want to contact your local IMAX theaters to see whether they use the larger glasses or not. For many people who wear glasses, bigger truly is better. Forget about those cheap plastic glasses the theater provides you.

Renowned director Christopher Nolan prefers to sit near the front, in the middle of the third row for cinemascope ratio, and slightly behind the center line for IMAX theaters. Experts suggest sitting in the center of the room, aligned with the screen, to centralize your field of vision and prevent strain.

Here are some key distinctions: Screen Size: Real IMAX theaters feature a significantly larger screen compared to traditional movie theaters. A genuine IMAX screen can reach up to 72 feet (22 meters) in width, providing an expansive and immersive viewing experience.

Expect your seat to move and to feel environmental effects such as water and wind.

There are only 30 theaters worldwide, including 19 in the U.S., screening Oppenheimer in that format including the AMC Universal CityWalk in Los Angeles, the AMC Lincoln Square in New York, the Cinemark Dallas, the Regal King of Prussia near Philadelphia and the AutoNation IMAX in Fort Lauderdale.

Because the size of the film is so large, Imax have designed special lenses that have enough coverage to be used with these cameras without vignetting. They are made from glass by Carl Zeiss which are rehoused and designed specially for Imax.

4DX is often mistaken for or compared to IMAX 3D. However, both are vastly different standards. IMAX screens have more to do with the picture quality and the sound, whereas 4DX is more about the seats and practical effects. 4DX cinemas can screen both 2D and 3D movies.

You're also literally seeing more of the movie thanks to the aspect ratio. Where most movie theater screens are 16:9, a widescreen format that tends to cut off the top and bottom of the frame, IMAX is 1.43:1, more closely representing a square that allows for a larger picture from top to bottom.
