More compact, the PureTech naturally aspirated 3-cylinder engine reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 25% compared to a 4-cylinder engine with the same power. This means you benefit from a reduction in fuel consumption of approximately 1.5 litres every 62 miles while maintaining optimum driving pleasure.
The 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine is developed from the naturally aspirated version but adds a new generation high-performance turbo offering superb low engine speed torque. The PureTech 3-cylinder turbocharged engine reduces fuel consumption and emissions of CO2by up to 21% compared to the 4 cylinder engine of the same power.

The main issue stems from the use of rubber timing belts immersed in engine oil, which, while improving performance, compromised reliability. Premature wear of these belts leads to rubber fragments contaminating the oil, causing a range of issues from excessive oil consumption to complete engine failure.
It's a bad design overall, but like anything, they can run fine if looked after properly. As long as you stick to the updated servicing which was implemented after the recall. 12500 miles or 12 months, and get the oil pick up pipe cleaned, as it's oil starvation which kills the engines.
[5 June 2018] – Today, the Turbo PureTech 3-cylinder petrol engine (110 hp and 130 hp) was named International Engine of the Year in the 1-litre to 1.4-litre category, for the 4th year in a row, by the panel of the 20th International Engine of the Year Awards in Stuttgart.

NOTE: The replacement interval for the timing belt is now 100,000 km or 6 years. Belt width must be checked. If the belt width does not meet the specification, the lower oil pan must be removed to inspect the oil pump screen.
Peugeot and Citroen issued a recall in 2021 relating to the wet timing belt degrading and causing restricted oil flow within the engine, which could cause significant damage.
This engine uses a 'wetbelt' system that runs the cam belt in oil. In most cases, these types of wetbelt systems are designed to last the life of the engine and never be changed.
