Amish Granola Recipe

In today's post, I am sharing two Amish homemade granola cereal recipes. The one recipe is the Amish granola that I grew up eating. And the second recipe is a healthier Oats and Honey Granola cereal recipe.

My dad was a farmer, and he always wanted a big breakfast. So my mom cooked a hearty breakfast for the family every morning, except Sunday mornings.

Sunday mornings were too busy with trying to get the chores done, and everyone had to be ready to leave for the church service by 8:00. So we'd grab a piece of toast or granola cereal on Sunday mornings.

Amish Breakfast

But on every other morning of the week, we had a big breakfast with a variety of meat, hash browns, eggs, etc. And along with that, my dad always had his bowl of cooked oatmeal and granola cereal.

My mom made a small pot of oatmeal for him every morning. And he put the cooked oats in his bowl and topped it with a layer of homemade granola cereal.

This was what he wanted every single morning, along with a cup of hot tea. He wasn't a coffee drinker, but he wanted a cup of hot mint tea along with his breakfast.

Granola Sugar-Free

I am a cereal person, and I could eat cereal every morning for breakfast and be perfectly happy with it. (I love cereal for a late-night snack too!)

My husband, however, likes a big cooked breakfast. But he doesn't get a cooked breakfast every morning.

I do, however, always have my no-sugar granola cereal in the cupboard, and sometimes he will eat that before he goes to work.

This healthy granola cereal has protein and fills you up more than most store-bought cereal does. It will give you energy for the day. There are also added health benefits to eating oats.

Homemade Granola for Parfaits

I love this homemade gluten-free granola! And it's not only good to eat as a cereal, but I also use it for yogurt parfaits.

I shared my homemade vanilla yogurt recipe (click here for the yogurt recipe), and I had a request for a granola recipe to go along with it.

This High Protein Granola Recipe, with lots of nuts, is perfect for yogurt parfaits.

Granola with Protein - Homemade Protein Granola

This Amish homemade granola cereal has lots of nuts in it for protein. But if you want healthy protein granola, with an even higher protein content, you could add a scoop of vanilla protein powder (affiliate link).

This granola cereal recipe is very versatile. You can add extra protein, raw cashew pieces, chopped dates, raisins, pepitas, sunflower seeds, or anything else you think would go well with granola cereal.

But if you're adding raisins or other dried fruit to your granola, wait to add them until after the granola is roasted and cooled.

How to Prepare Amish Granola Cereal

Pour the oats into a large bowl, and add coconut, flaxseed, nuts, and cinnamon.

Heat the olive oil and honey in a saucepan, over low heat, until the honey is melted. Add salt, vanilla, and maple flavoring. Then stir till combined and pour over top of the oats, stirring to coat evenly.

Spread the granola onto a large cookie sheet pan or two 9 x 13 cake pans. Then bake at 275 degrees for approximately 1 1/2 hours or the desired doneness. Stir occasionally to roast evenly.

My Second Homemade Granola Cereal Recipe

The granola that my mom made at home is not quite as healthy as my sugar-free granola recipe. And I prefer the sugar-free granola cereal, but my boys don't care for the honey vanilla granola recipe with nuts.

They prefer the Amish butterscotch granola recipe that my mom used. So, I make both kinds, and I'm sharing both recipes with you today.

Butterscotch Granola Recipe - that my mom made

In a large bowl, mix 5 c. quick oats (or you can use a mixture of quick oats and rolled oats if you prefer), 1 c. rice crispy cereal, 1 package of graham crackers (broken up into small pieces), 1 c. coconut flakes, and 1/2 c. chopped pecans.

In a saucepan, melt 2 sticks of butter. Add 1/3 c. brown sugar, 1/2 tsp. salt, and 1 tsp. baking soda. Stir until well combined, then pour it over the oat mixture, stirring to cover all the oats.

Spread the granola cereal onto a large cookie sheet pan. Bake at 300 degrees for 40 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool for several minutes.

Add 1/2 c. mini butterscotch chips. Cool completely and store in an airtight container.

  • I can't find the mini butterscotch chips at a regular supermarket nowadays, so I usually get mine at an Amish or Mennonite bulk food store. But you can also purchase them from Amazon if you don't have access to a local bulk food store.

Nine grain flakes, rather than rolled oats. Nice recipe thank you.
